ARE ITALY’S €1 HOMES WORTH IT?

If you subscribe to this newsletter, chances are you too have been targed by the #algorithm and pushed tons of content about “€1 homes for sale in Italy.” What’s that all about? Is it real? Is it worth it? Let’s find out:

€501k EUR dream home: Meredith Tabbone from Chicago bid on an abandoned house in Sicily starting at €1. She won the auction at €5.6k and bought the space next door. She transformed the windowless, asbestos-filled space installing electricity, running water, a spa, wine cellar, and the head-to-toe renovation for a total estimated €500k renovation.

Meredith has since bought two guest houses in the same village for €38k and an additional building for 7€4k to turn into an art gallery and artist retreat.

Keep up with Meredith’s restoration journey on instagram or tiktok.

Family saves ghost-town with €25k: Couple Maurizio and Paola restored a home in ruin in ‘ghost town’ Ghesc, Italy, with €25,000 and 1,000 hours of work.

Calling upon other young families to revitalize medieval ghost towns and preserve architectural heritage, the couple launched "The Village Laboratory" in Ghesc. The lab offers workshops on historical stone construction, a communal kitchen, pizza oven, and concert spaces for public use.

Today, Ghesc has a population of 3: Maurizio, Paola, and their son Emil. There are now 4 more homes being restored in the village.

The true cost of the $1 home: Insider News tracks down two couples who bought into the $1 home scheme to figure out “did it work?” and importantly, “how much did they really spend?” Meet Danny, Tam and Gary. The video gives tips for potential buyers and goes into the details of the renovations.

🚨 Spoiler alert: Tam and Gary spent a total of $158k to buy and renovate their 4 bed / 4.5 bath house in Italy. A house this size would be over $1M+ in their home city of LA. On the lower end, Danny spent $10k for a live-in ready home after small renovations.
