ACCOUNTS WE LOVE
AGAINST MILLENIAL GREY. THE AGE OF AVERAGE.
But first, Who’s afraid of a cheap old house? We are by no means the first account dedicated to beautiful cheap properties. Aptly named, “Cheap Old Houses” started as an instagram account and has now grown. The couple have launched an HGTV and HBO Max show dedicated to the discovery of magical places. We love them for their cute branding. Mostly featuring USA properties. Spread the love:
I can’t believe I am posting a buzzfeed link in 2024… I stumbled upon this round-up of “Before and After” renovations that will either make you cringe or nod. My algorithm constantly pushes before and after content because who doesn’t love the voyeurism of it all?
It does PAIN me to see horrible renovations. When they take out all of the character and original features of the home. I love that there is a movement against millennial grey and grey-washed vinyl. For example, “Nothing can prepare you for what this bathroom looks like” (volume UP)
😠😠 Why does everything look the fucking same? Why did millennial grey take over like a dull, cold wildfire? When did Airbnbs - marketed for their authenticity - become IKEA showrooms? Welcome to the age of average, as Alex Murrel calls it.
The term “AirSpace” was coined to describe this convergence of interior design. It features recognizable symbols like reclaimed wood, Edison bulbs, and refurbished industrial lighting, aiming to provide familiar, comforting surroundings for
“a wealthy, mobile elite who want to feel like they’re visiting somewhere “authentic” while they travel, but who actually just crave more of the same: more rustic interiors and sans-serif logos and splashes of cliche accent colours on rugs and walls.”
Take the “International coffee shop” aesthetic: big glass storefronts, reclaimed wood furniture, …. what you come to realize is “the coffee roaster Four Barrel in San Francisco looks like the Australian Toby’s Estate in Brooklyn looks like The Coffee Collective in Copenhagen looks like Bear Pond Espresso in Tokyo. You can get a dry cortado with perfect latte art at any of them.”
If you have some time, I highly recommend the read. It goes beyond interiors to brand design, beauty standards, global taste, cars, and more. It explores how and why our homes, coffee shops, restaurants, buildings, cars, fashion, movies, books, video games, and brands all look the same.
It ends with a calling to embrace difference. Whatever that means.
If you have some time, I highly recommend the read: https://www.alexmurrell.co.uk/articles/the-age-of-average
